Patterns of behaviour when continued for a while become habits. Your mind and body absorb the pattern into your normal daily activity and relatively quickly it becomes normal. In fact, the pattern becomes so ingrained that your mind and body actively crave the activity to fulfil part of its basic needs. To overcome this two sided assault it is important that you come up with a plan of attack in order to quit smoking. Although the cold-turkey or willpower technique works for some people, the vast majority of smokers will have success only with a more comprehensive and detailed plan with the right amount of preparation.
