When we think of asbestos usage, we primarily think of its presence in building materials during the 19th and 20th centuries. However, this is not the only industry that has found numerous uses for this substance. Militaries throughout the years have found asbestos to be a useful material in a variety of different products.

First, it’s important to understand why asbestos is so appealing, besides the fact that it causes diseases like asbestosis and mesothelioma. Asbestos describes a family of six different types of silicate minerals. These six types are divided into two groups, serpentine and amphibole. The only member of the serpentine group is chrysotile. It is actually the most commonly used type of asbestos. The amphibole group contains amosite, crocidolite, anthophyllite, tremolite, and actinolite. The second most popular type of asbestos, amosite, is present in this group.

The properties of both silicate minerals and asbestos in general are extremely beneficial in a number of different fields. First, asbestos breaks down into fibers that can easily be woven together or added to other substances. Second, this material is resistant to many things, including chemicals, heat, fire, electricity, and degradation. Therefore, it is a very good insulator against all of these things. Lastly, it has high tensile strength and flexibility.

People first recognized all of these useful properties of asbestos in ancient Greece. Its prevalence skyrocketed after the Industrial Revolution, when the military picked it up for widespread use. The U.S. Navy utilized asbestos-laden products in construction, maintenance, and repair materials. Other divisions of the armed forces soon picked up the mineral as well. This led to the presence of the mineral on everything from aircraft to tanks, regular vehicles and ships. In fact, the Army and Air Force recognized the insulating effects of asbestos and used it to protect electrical wires.

In the early to mid 20th century, asbestos was so widespread that it was even using in plumbing equipment. Thus, it’s no surprise that the Navy used over 300 asbestos-containing items in their ships and shipyards alone. The Navy even ordered that asbestos insulation and other materials containing the substance had to be present on all ships constructed in 1939 and after.

However, it was that same year that the Navy Surgeon General recognized the harmful effects of asbestos, like asbestosis. It was still used, though, because of its numerous beneficial properties. It was not until the 1970s that the military forces began to phase out asbestos.

If you or someone you know has come into contact with asbestos, you have the chance of developing mesothelioma or other health problems. Mesothelioma can be a deadly disease that can rob you of your loved ones.

For more information regarding mesothelioma and the deadly effects of asbestos, check out the mesothelioma lawyers at Williams Kherkher today.

Are You At Risk of Getting Lip Cancer?

Lip cancer is the most common form of oral cancer. The risk of developing lip cancer is greater for some people than for other. Men over the age of 40 are in the risk group but everyone is at risk especially if the use tobacco or alcohol, or have a history of head or neck cancer.

Interestingly, this type of skin cancer usually occurs on the lower lip. Lip cancer can also spread to the head and neck areas.

Most lip cancers start in squamous cells. Those are the thin, flat cells that line the lips. These cancer cells are known as squamous cell carcinomas. Squamous cell carcinoma usually develops in areas of leukoplakia (white patches of cells that do not rub off).

The risk factors for lip cancer are the same as for skin cancer with sun exposure being one of the highest risk factors. We can, however, reduce that risk by avoiding the sun and using a lip balm with sunscreen.

Other risk factors include: using tobacco products; heavy alcohol use; being male; or being infected with human papillomavirus (HPV).

Some of the symptoms of oral or lip cancer are:
-A sore on the lip or in the mouth that does not heal.
-A lump or thickening on the lips or gums or in the mouth.
-A white or red patch on the gums, tongue, tonsils, or lining of the mouth.
-Bleeding, pain, or numbness in the lip or mouth.

Note: Lip cancer may not have any symptoms and is sometimes found during a regular visit to the dentist.
Note: These symptoms could be indication of other medical conditions.

Some of the tests and procedures used to detect lip or oral cancer are:
-Physical exam of the lips and oral cavity.
-Endoscopy: A procedure to look at organs and tissues inside the body to check for abnormal areas.
-X-rays of the head, neck, and chest.
-Biopsy: The removal of cells or tissues so they can be viewed under a microscope by a pathologist.
-Exfoliative cytology: A procedure to collect cells from the lip or oral cavity.
-PET scan (positron emission tomography scan): A procedure to find malignant tumor cells in the body.

Prognosis or chances of recovery depends on certain factors. The factors would include the stage of the cancer and where the tumor is in the lip or mouth. It also depend on whether the cancer has spread to blood vessels.

The treatment options would depend on the stage of the cancer, the size of the tumor and where the tumor is located in the lip. Whether the patient’s appearance and ability to talk and eat can stay the same would also be taken into consideration.

It is easily to overlook the symptoms of lip or oral until more invasive treatments have to be used. If you have any hints that you be developing this type of cancer don’t put off going to your doctor to get them checked out.

Some of this information was obtained from the National Cancer Institute. Their website is: http://www.cancer.gov

Medical tests are important tools, but they have limits. Some people think that the more tests they have, the better off they’ll be. Wise consumers know medical tests have costs and risks as well as benefits. To help your doctor make good choices about tests for you, you need to:

Learn the basics.

What is the name of the test and why do I need it?

If the test is positive, what will the doctor do differently?

What could happen if I don’t have the test?

Consider the risks and benefits.

How accurate is the test? How often does it indicate a problem exists when there is none (false positive)? How often does it say there is no problem when there is one (false negative)?

Is the test painful? What can go wrong?

How will I feel afterward? Are there less risky alternatives?

Ask about costs.
How much does the test cost? Is there a less expensive test that might give the same information?

Let your doctor know:
Your concerns about the test. What you expect the test will do for you. Ask if that is realistic.

Any medications you are taking.

Whether you are pregnant or have other medical conditions.

Your decision to accept the test.

If a test seems costly, risky, and not likely to change the recommended treatment, ask your doctor if you can avoid it. Try to agree on the best approach. No test can be done without your permission.

Once you agree to a test, ask what you can do to reduce the chance of errors. Ask about food, exercise, alcohol, or medications to avoid before the test. After the test, ask to review the results. Take notes for your home records. If the results are unexpected and the error rate of the test is high, consider redoing the test before basing further treatment on the results.

I know for sure that prescription drug abuse is on the rise around the world especially so in the United States.

One of these drugs happens to be hydrocodone and the leaders which contain this drug names are Vicodin, Lorcet, Lortab, and Norco. Addiction to these drugs is beginning to be seen as much as alcoholism.

This is frightening to say the least. Beating any type of drug addiction is hard but beating an opiate addiction is I think even harder.

First thing you will have to do is tell dispose of all your drugs and cut your ties to all your connections this means deleting their phone numbers from your cell phone.

If you do not do this it will be darn near impossible to stop using hydrocodone. The reason I say this is that the hydrocodone withdrawal is very unforgiving when you do kick.

If you are using drugs to manage your pain you may want to seek other alternatives like maybe taking Motrin or going to a health spa that deals in pain management.

In any case you will be faced with some heavy withdrawals so be prepared. If you have tried to quit several times on your own without success you may want to look into hydrocodone treatment.

Hydrocodone treatment is a growing very fast with the number of new addicts we are seeing daily.

In hydrocodone treatment you can choose to be medically detoxed by a completely trained staff. They will be at your beck and call twenty four seven.

In most treatment facility’s they start you with subutex and lower your dose using suboxone.

This seems to work quite well and most people have no complaints and it is for the most part painless. So why not stop using today!

If you wish to learn more about Hydrocodone treatment.

Have you ever had to wait weeks or even months for medical treatment in your own country? Have you been shocked at the high cost of the treatment … and then found that both the wait and the cost has kept you from having the holiday of a lifetime?

Well, I have good news for you – “Medical Tourism” (also called Health Tourism) is all about taking a vacation and getting treated at the same time. Medical treatment in the Philippines is extremely cheap and it comes with very little waiting time… and you will be in safe hands throughout the procedure.

And that’s not all – after your medical vacation you will be able to recuperate in surroundings that are conducive to healing.

For most people the greatest benefit of medical tourism is financial – only a fraction of the cost you would spend on treatment in Western countries. This saving is the main reason so many tourists go abroad as part of a medical package that includes flights, transfers, treatment, and recovery in an exotic tropical locale.

In fact medical packages are becoming the fastest growing segment of the tourism industry worldwide and is one reason more and more people from the US, Canada, Australia, and Europe are coming to the Philippines. The Philippines recently became the first country in Asia to host the prestigious World Health Tourism Congress which had previously only been held in Europe.

And the quality of health care in the Philippines is first class. Tourism Undersecretary for Sports and Wellness, Cynthia Carrion, recently said, “Our doctors and nurses count among the best in the world. Many of them trained in prestigious hospitals in the United States, Australia and Europe.”

She pointed out that the Philippines has a long history of medical expertise in a culture of caring and hospitable people. She said that Philippine health services not only emphasize quality, but just as importantly, provide service with a heart.

The medical services available here range from cosmetic surgery to dental implants. Here is a just a brief list …

* Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery
* Cosmetic Maxilla Facial Surgery
* Dentistry
* Dermatology
* Gynecologic Procedures
* Heart Procedures
* Ophthalmology
* Hip Surgery
… and more.

Once your treatment is over you will be able to pamper yourself in a tropical locale of your choice. And there are many to choose from: the Banaue Rice Terraces, the Chocolate Hills of Bohol, visit the world’s longest Underground River in Palawan, see unique wildlife, or simply stretch out on one of the long white sand beaches, relax, and watch the beautiful sunsets.

Nor do you have to recuperate on your own – bring your family with you and let them watch over you as you recover.

Now you can have your cake and eat it too – Philippine health tourism lets you avoid the high cost of medical treatment and the long wait, and yet you can still have the holiday of a lifetime with your family.

Bali Hai Beach Resort in the Bauang – San Fernando area of La Union, Philippines, is an ideal place for rest and recuperation. Set in lush tropical gardens overlooking the South China Sea you will find air-conditioned bungalows, a 24 hour bar and restaurant, a swimming pool, cable TV, in-room cable Internet and Wi-Fi, tours, and much more.

More than half of men and women in the United States experience hair loss. About 30% of people have hair loss by age 30 years, and about 50% have hair loss by age 50 years. Hair loss is so common that most of the time it is considered a normal variation and not a disease. Other animals closely related to humans, such as the chimpanzee, also lose their hair. The greatest issue when it comes to hair loss is the effect on your self confidence and esteem. And let’s face it. How many people can stand baldness for the rest of their life?

There are many causes for alopecia or baldness to happen. These can range from hereditary, medication or hormonal changes. In fact, most of the cases are due to genetic reasons and if you are suffering from this condition, then there are many remedies and treatments on the market that you can choose from.

According to my understanding the following are 3 ways to help you find the best cures for curtailing hair loss and promoting hair re-growth.

Drugs

Have you ever heard of minoxidil? This is a FDA approved drug that has been in used in the market to treat cases of alopecia. This substance is safe to use unlike propecia which many people have reported to experience side effects with. For males, a concentration of 5% is recommended. As for women, only 2% concentration is normally prescribed as there are facing thinning hair and not baldness.

Herbs

Look out for hair loss products containing herbs such as saw palmetto, nettle roots and siberian ginseng. These herbs are mixed together with minoxidil for more potency against hair loss. For women, you should choose horse tail instead of saw palmetto as female alopecia is slightly different.

Biotin

Biotin is a vitamin H that is vital for thick hair growth. A deficiency in this nutrient can result in frail brittle hair. Studies have shown than people use hair re-growth stimulants products containing biotin found to have 15% additional success rate in improving their hair loss condition.

Turn on the Laser

Laser therapy devices, such as the HairMax LaserComb have been successful for some patients. These devices claim to reverse hair loss by energizing hair follicles and promote growth. The HairMax comb has been cleared by the FDA for the promotion of hair growth.

I believe it is always best to keep yourself looking great by staying healthy and working with your barber or stylist to create a style that works well with what you’ve got. If you are looking for additional options for treating hair loss, please read Medical Treatments for Baldness.

Hair loss can be a tough problem to deal with, especially for younger men. Fortunately, these day there is not the negative stigma surrounding male pattern baldness and hair loss and many men, even those with full heads of hair are choosing to go completely bald. We have a young guy who works in our barber salon who just turned 18, but his hairline is middle-aged. He has chosen to not fight nature and shave his head completely and the look works quite well on him. For those of us who are thinning and not lucky enough to have the right dome for a bald head, following are a few non-medical treatment options to consider.

You may be overwhelmed by the pressure of caring the older members of your family who require constant care; but you are not alone. There are millions of adults who finds a hard time taking care of older relatives or parents while working and taking care of their children. Sometimes one is pressed down under the dual pressure of taking care of older members and his own needs; but your work is also as important as taking care of the elder people. If you don’t take care of your own responsibilities, you will land nowhere. When that happens you won’t be able to take care of anyone else.

Using home health care is a good option to get the rest and get relief you need while still making sure that the elder people are getting proper care and protection. Don’t feel guilty if you take some time off to take of yourself and your own family, but home health care is a necessity if you want to continue to care for your loved ones in the future. If you are in a dilemma whether to get the services of home health care, consider the following benefits of using home health care:

Your loved ones are taken care of by trained medical staff – Hiring home health care is far safer than hiring strangers to care for your loved ones. Since home health care workers are trained medical professionals, should an emergency arise in your home, these medical professionals can respond properly.

Social interaction – Every people needs social interaction, even the elder people in your home. Hiring home health care workers even if for couple of days, gives your loved ones the chance to talk with and interact with other people, which will help them stay more connected to the world.

Prescription Support – You may be concerned about the elder people in your home, whether they eat nutritiously, when you can’t be there to give them a meal. You may be concerned whether your loved ones take their medications when they need to, in your absence. If you have a home health care staff then you can be sure that your loved ones are having nutritional diet and having their medications at the right time.

Meeting Obligations – If you hire home health care workers, then you don’t have to worry about meeting your other obligations like your professional work and appointments or taking your loved ones to doctor or parks. You can meet your other obligations knowing that your loved ones are being safely driven wherever they need to go.

These are few of the benefits you will get if you hire home health care staffs. Don’t overburden yourself with responsibilities and obligations to your elder people and work; instead consider hiring home elder care services as an alternative to do everything by yourself.

Colon cancer is a disease characterized by the uncontrolled division of abnormal cells in the colon and the formation of tumors from these cells. Despite the presence of polyps in the human large intestine, presentation of colon cancer symptoms at an early stage is very low. In some cases, it may not even manifest symptoms. Today, colon cancer is the second leading malignancy in the United States and the fourth worldwide. The combination of these facts gives rise to the importance of colon screening methods aimed at determining early stages of colon cancer.

There are a number of screening methods available for colon cancer detection. These tests are done alone or in combination with other tests in order to distinguish colon cancer from other intestinal diseases. Hereunder is a list of these screening and detection procedures.

Digital Rectal Examination

A routine part of physical examination, digital rectal examination (DRE) examines the lower portion of the rectum for tumor and polyp growth. This test is done using a lubricated gloved finger inserted inside the rectum to feel for anomalous growths. This test is also capable in ascertaining prostate cancer in men.

Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT)

The American Cancer Society recommends FOBT to be done yearly in combination with sigmoidoscopy. FOBT is statistically noted as being 24% effective in finding colorectal cancer by itself. There are currently two types of fecal occult blood test, these are the Guaiac FOBT and the Immunochemical FOBT. The Guaiac FOBT utilizes the chemical, guaiac, to detect the presence blood protein hemoglobin in fecal samples by checking for traces of Heme. Heme is an iron-containing component of hemoglobin. Immunochemical FOBT uses antibodies to check stools for human hemoglobin. According to studies, FOBT when performed annually reduces colorectal deaths by about 15 – 35%.

Sigmoidoscopy

Sigmoidoscopy is a test wherein a lighted instrument, the sigmoidoscope, is inserted into the rectum and lower colon to examine the area. Precancerous, cancerous and other abnormal growths can be detected during this test, and these growths can be removed and biopsied. Statistics show that when done in conjunction with FOBT, the sigmoidoscopy helps in detecting about 76% of colon tumor growths among individuals in the 50s-80s age range.

Colonoscopy

A colonoscope is a lighted instrument used to examine the colon and rectal area for abnormal growths. During a colonoscopy, abnormal polyps or growths can be traced, removed and biopsied. Colonoscopy can examine areas missed by a sigmoidoscope mainly due to its longer reach. Before colonscopy is performed a thorough cleansing of the colon is carried out and patients are sedated.

Double Contract Barium Enema (DCBE)

In DCBE, air is introduced into the colon and the patient is given an enema filled with barium solution to help outline the colon for an array of x-rays. In conjunction with colonoscopy, DCBE helps in detecting about 30-50 percent of colorectal cancer cases. However, DCBE may miss smaller polyps according to research.

Computerized Tomographic Colonoscopy

As called Virtual Colonoscopy, the test is accomplished with the use of a special x-ray equipment to generate photographs of the colon and rectum at different angles. These photographs are then assembled by a computer to produces an image detailing the large intestine and showing polyp growth and other abnormalities. Like standard colonoscopy, it is necessary to perform a thorough cleansing of the colon. However, since this test is less invasive, it is less discomforting and does not require sedation.

Despite the presence of these tests, it was reported that about 44% of adults within the 50s-80s age group have undergone routine screening raising colorectal cancer incidence. Let us not be afraid to undergo cancer screening, we must realize that early detection is tantamount to survival from cancer.

There are many methods that are used to fight against cancer and one of the most commonly used method is radiation treatment. The idea is that by focusing energy in the form of x-rays, gamma rays or protons, the cancer is either destroyed or slowed down. This obviously very dangerous and not very effective. But is radiation treatment for breast cancer really the best way?

Nobody in their right mind would like to get radiated, cut or poisoned with drugs, but in the fight against cancer these are the main methods. The treatments that are used to treat cancer, do more harm then good for the body and a lot of people, do not die because of the cancer itself, but because of the treatment.

Radiation therapy may not be as dangerous as chemotherapy for example, because when you take drugs the whole body suffers, but when radiation is used then only the radiated areas get damaged. But the problem is that by radiating somebody, the risk of getting some other type of cancer also increases. It seems that every conventional method is meant to fail.

The main problem with methods like radiation, is that it at best only eliminates the symptom of the diseases, which is the tumor. But the cause is not cured and the chances that the cancer may come back are very high. It would be a really good idea to also do some research on alternative treatments, not to completely eliminate conventional treatments like radiation, but to make them more effective.

The biggest mistake a person can do, who has breast cancer, is not looking at various other ways to treat and cure cancer. A lot of alternative treatments have been far more successful than conventional treatments. The best way to make sure you beat breast cancer, is by finding out how other people beat their cancer. What did they use? What can you learn from them?
